What's your strategy when it comes to you best content? Do you put it all out whenever you can, or do you save something special for later?

It happens to me from time to time. As I sit down and begin to write a blog post, I start to feel like this could be one of my best pieces of work yet. Then I am faced with a dilemma. Should I post this now, despite having very little readership, or should I wait and deliver this gem once my audience is bigger.

I’ve arrived at two different ways of thinking about this problem.

If I was to publish such great content now then it would attract more readers to my blog. Oppositely if I post it now and not many people see it, then it may become buried. After that point it will be much harder to resurrect it when I have more fans. It may even become lost forever. Which leaves me in a difficult position.

I have tried both methods with some measure of success and also with great failures.

One time I posted the article and I saw a dramatic increase in my readership. Another time I was very confident that it was going to be a great article and not only did it fail to bring in new readers, I actually saw a decrease in traffic. Needless to say I was quite disappointed and I thought it would have been better to wait until I had more traffic coming through to post it. It’s difficult to know what is going to be a success and what is not.

I haven’t come up with a steadfast rule yet but currently I take a look at my last week or so’s posts to see how much powerful content I’ve had already. If it’s been a good week then I might feel more inclined to save it for a slow news day.

What’s your strategy when it comes to you best content? Do you put it all out whenever you can, or do you save something special for later? Let me know in the comments.

When creating award winning content you need to take into consideration the fact that many of your readers are going to be (a.) in a hurry and will skim through your article very quickly (b.) too lazy to read every word (c.) doing countless number of other random multi-tasking things while simultaneously reading your article.

For this reason it is very important that your posts are easy for people to read. There are a few simple and easy things you do to improve the overall readability of your blog.

#1 Break it down. Break your post down into short paragraphs. Anything more than five lines of text begins to look intimidating to many readers.

#2 Boldly Go. When writing a longer story (more than 3 paragraphs) always try to summarize the key point of each paragraph with a bold statement. This makes it much easier for readers to skim the article and get the main points. It’s important to give them the choice rather than choose for them.

#3 List-en up. When possible you should break it down further into list form. Lists are very popular because all of the data is organized, if you don’t like #1 then you can skip it and read #2 and so on down the line. This is a big time saver for many readers.

#4 Never stand alone. Occasionally there are those blocks of text that feel the need to stand alone at the bottom of a line. Whenever you catch these guys in your paragraphs, delete or add as many words as it takes to either remove the line or fill it in. Nothing looks worse and breaks up the flow of your page than a random empty space between two lines of text.

#5 Less is more. Be quick and to the point with what you’re trying to say. Unless you’re writing a short story or a mystery novel. Most people are just digging through the paragraph waiting for you to get on with it.

#6 Use your head. Headings and subheadings are there for a reason and you should not ignore them. A properly structured article might look something like this. Title – Intro – Heading – Text – Subheading – Text

Now again but with a little more style.

When creating award winning content you need to take into consideration the fact that many of your readers are going to be (a.) in a hurry and will need to skim through your article very quickly (b.)are too lazy to read every single word or (c.) doing countless number of other random multi-tasking things while simultaneously reading your article.

There are a few simple and easy things you do to improve the overall readability of your blog, and make it look more interesting as well.

Your readers will thank you.

When you first begin your blog, starting with the very first idea that you may want to create a blog, there are a number of obstacles you will come across. Usually the idea or inspiration comes first, and then comes thoughts of layout and design. So after a month of back and forth setting up the perfectly thought out theme weighing all your choices, you can now sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor. However this is actually point where you will encounter the most difficult part of blogging. Finding your style. When you have no traffic its almost impossible to know what the masses of people expect from you.

Your first few rounds of blog posts kind of feel like open mic night at a local pub. You most likely have been working on some material up in your head for some time now, but until this day you’ve never actually said it out loud for people to hear.

The key to this is for better or worse to just put everything you’ve got out there then sit back and watch the people react. In the beginning I found myself going from one extreme to the other, trying to appeal to a variety of readers. However the more I tried to get the attention of everyone, the more I succeeded in gaining the attention of no one.

Somewhere in between is where my true personality lies and that is where I have found the most success. Between the Comedy Goldmine and Cnet News Blog is where the green grass grows. While both of those sites may be good and popular, and you and your readers may enjoy both. It does not mean they want them both at the same time from the same place.

What’s your style?

My first few posts were often sarcastic and arbitrary, and did not gain much attention. Later I got more serious and it seemed like more people were listening. However with many newfound readers I was unsure of what they sought to gain from reading my blog. Recently I decided to perform an experiment. I posted a news story coupled with an absurd picture to see if there was any reaction. I felt like the picture was funny but could be offensive to some, but I went with it anyway because there is no other better way to gauge the age or temperament of the readers. If everyone listening in is in the 14-20 range then I may have gained in popularity, oppositely if they were say 21-40 range then it was less likely to gain me any traction with them.

Overnight I saw my RSS reader count drop from 14 to 7. So I took down the picture and decided to report the results here. I consider the experiment a success though. Despite losing half my readers I would rather lose 7 today than possibly lose several hundred down the road by not knowing what I now know.

The moral of the story is that you should not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, and try a few different things with your blog. Most likely it will take many mistakes before you find your perfect style and if your readers are loyal then they will suffer through a few bad posts with you. If they are not loyal then they are not the kind of readers you really want anyway.

I find that writing like anything else takes practice. The more you do it the better you will get. Looking back at things I’ve written years ago makes me embarrassed, but on the positive side, I have evidence of improvement.

I make a point to write everyday, the majority of the time its unrelated to my blog or work in general. Writing should be something entertaining and just as much a part of your daily routine as “The Daily Show” is. I find that its easier for me to do this by keeping a number of different projects in rotation.

Here are 4 things that you should work into your daily routine to become a better writer:

1. Keep A Daily Journal

This one is the easiest to do. When you can’t think of anything else to write about, write about stuff that happened throughout the day. It gives you a chance to practice without having to think very hard or do any research. I keep a journal handy, but I only write it in when something worth remembering happens. It’s also nice to be able to look back later at event’s you would have otherwise forgot.

2. Keep a Dream Journal

Some days when I wake up I realize that I just had the most messed up dream. Flying saucer Xbox360’s, neon colored aliens chasing me through a chocolate covered mountain villa, Oh and once I was ManBearPig. All I want to do is tell someone about it.

However the funny thing about your dreams is you will only be able to remember most of it for about the first one to two hours that you’re awake. I keep a notebook next to my bed for this occasion. I try to get down all of the major events that I can remember as soon as I wake up. That way later in the day I can fill in the rest of the story. Otherwise by the time you get to work or school you might have already forgotten it already.

3. Write Short Stories

Sometimes writing about things that happen exclusively to you can become a mundane activity. Not to mention most of the people just aren’t that interested in reading it. Let’s face the fact that you are not a spy, a superhero, or much of a protagonist in anyway. Why not take a break from reality, instead of watching tv or reading something someone else has come up with try making up your own story.

Taking in information all day uses a whole different part of your brain than creating something new does. Using your imagination is not just for kids and sometimes it can be challenging to come up with a beginning, middle, and end without giant plot holes. My favorite thing about writing short stories is seeing how the story changes from what you thought it was going to be in the beginning.

4. Keep An Idea Book

Genius strikes us at the most inopportune times. Most of the times when I am inspired to write something I’m sitting in the car, at work, or walking around the grocery store. Before I started keeping a small pocket sized notebook with me I would always say to myself “That’s an awesome idea” or “I should write a post about that”, however by the time you get home in front of your computer your thoughts are generally much less inspired than they were before, and it will show. So for this reason, ALWAYS keep pen and paper handy wherever you go.

Writing everyday has alot of benefits. You will be a better thinker, have more orgainzed thoughts, a better editor, and you will also learn more about yourself in the process. Who knows maybe one of you short stories will be made into a movie someday.
