Why You Should Write Everyday?

Why You Should Write Everyday

I find that writing like anything else takes practice. The more you do it the better you will get. Looking back at things I’ve written years ago makes me embarrassed, but on the positive side, I have evidence of improvement.

I make a point to write everyday, the majority of the time its unrelated to my blog or work in general. Writing should be something entertaining and just as much a part of your daily routine as “The Daily Show” is. I find that its easier for me to do this by keeping a number of different projects in rotation.

Here are 4 things that you should work into your daily routine to become a better writer:

1. Keep A Daily Journal

This one is the easiest to do. When you can’t think of anything else to write about, write about stuff that happened throughout the day. It gives you a chance to practice without having to think very hard or do any research. I keep a journal handy, but I only write it in when something worth remembering happens. It’s also nice to be able to look back later at event’s you would have otherwise forgot.

2. Keep a Dream Journal

Some days when I wake up I realize that I just had the most messed up dream. Flying saucer Xbox360’s, neon colored aliens chasing me through a chocolate covered mountain villa, Oh and once I was ManBearPig. All I want to do is tell someone about it.

However the funny thing about your dreams is you will only be able to remember most of it for about the first one to two hours that you’re awake. I keep a notebook next to my bed for this occasion. I try to get down all of the major events that I can remember as soon as I wake up. That way later in the day I can fill in the rest of the story. Otherwise by the time you get to work or school you might have already forgotten it already.

3. Write Short Stories

Sometimes writing about things that happen exclusively to you can become a mundane activity. Not to mention most of the people just aren’t that interested in reading it. Let’s face the fact that you are not a spy, a superhero, or much of a protagonist in anyway. Why not take a break from reality, instead of watching tv or reading something someone else has come up with try making up your own story.

Taking in information all day uses a whole different part of your brain than creating something new does. Using your imagination is not just for kids and sometimes it can be challenging to come up with a beginning, middle, and end without giant plot holes. My favorite thing about writing short stories is seeing how the story changes from what you thought it was going to be in the beginning.

4. Keep An Idea Book

Genius strikes us at the most inopportune times. Most of the times when I am inspired to write something I’m sitting in the car, at work, or walking around the grocery store. Before I started keeping a small pocket sized notebook with me I would always say to myself “That’s an awesome idea” or “I should write a post about that”, however by the time you get home in front of your computer your thoughts are generally much less inspired than they were before, and it will show. So for this reason, ALWAYS keep pen and paper handy wherever you go.

Writing everyday has alot of benefits. You will be a better thinker, have more orgainzed thoughts, a better editor, and you will also learn more about yourself in the process. Who knows maybe one of you short stories will be made into a movie someday.
